Mike Hatrick Innovation Lead at Climate-KIC Nordic

Mike Hatrick worked in the aerospace industry for nearly 20 years as an engineer in product development and innovation. In the year 2000 a new product for which he had been lead designer was confirmed as runner-up in the MacRobert award for innovation in engineering (UK). This left Mike wondering “how did that happen?” They hadn’t set out on this product development with the word innovation in mind.

Since that time Mike has been obsessed with understanding how innovation can be taught, enabled and systemised. Between 2006-2011 he led a programme to design, deploy and embed an innovation strategy and programme at Bombardier Aerospace, before joining Swisslog Warehouse and Distribution Solutions as Innovation Manager where he repeated the process by growing and sustaining an infrastructure that delivers customer-focussed innovation.

In late 2014 Mike joined Climate-KIC, the European Union’s main climate innovation initiative where he is Innovation Lead for the Nordic countries.

A qualified aeronautical engineer, Mike has also trained in design thinking. He is a member of the advisory board for Front End of Innovation EMEA.

My research has been focused on understand how alternative and non-consumptive land-uses like ecotourism can contribute to the conservation of threatened biodiversity. Moreover, I am interested to study how one can develop sustainable ecotourism projects, aiming to preserve the natural resources and to engage people. Currently, I am preparing my PhD project that aims to analyze the ecotourism potential of the Sahara desert and to forecast those regions where the development of such projects will get the high return-on-investment, trying to attenuate poverty in less developed countries. To accomplish this, I will access uncertainties in responses of specific features over time and develop the best portfolio of actions. I am also interested in understanding how species respond to climate change and how biological invasions can compromise biodiversity and ecosystem services.
